Our History
As a family owned business, Hohulin has worked in the fencing industry for over 100 years. Founded in 1897 by Sam, Tim, and John Hohulin, sons of Gottlieb Hohulin, a German immigrant and weaver of fine jacquard fabrics, we are credited as being the first to commercially manufacture chain link fence fabric in the United States. On April 27, 1897, Hohulin filled their first fence order for 396 feet of 48” high fence with one gate. With an invoice for $26.90, the Hohulin Brothers Fence Company was in business.
Entrepreneurs at heart, the Hohulin brothers were also inventors, obtaining four patents for fencing products, including one for a special steel post for chain link fence in 1904. They also developed and built some of the first overhead slide gate systems in the Midwest. Today, Jim Schmidt, president of Hohulin, ensures the same quality products and commitment to service the company was founded upon. This long-standing history is why you can count on Hohulin Fence to provide the highest level of satisfaction and service.
Our Staff
Jim Schmidt has been involved in the fence industry since 1966. Jim has experience in fence installation, manufacturing, retail, and wholesale distribution. He was exposed to many areas of fencing throughout his career that allowed him to hone his talents. Now as an owner he is able to apply his skills to continue the long tradition of quality and service at Hohulin Fence Company, which was founded in 1897.
As president of the company he is involved with the day-to-day activities of the company including commercial sales. He continues to look forward to improving the future of the company in a very competitive atmosphere without sacrificing the long established values put in place by the Hohulin Brothers over a century ago.
He is proud of the heritage of the company and continues to build the reputation, as a dependable company that is able to design and build the most efficient security enclosures that will stand the test of time.
